German Dentist Appointment Phrases: Pain, Treatment, and Costs

A dental appointment becomes harder when you must describe exactly where something hurts, understand a proposed procedure, and ask what you may have to pay. You do not need specialist vocabulary. The most useful German dentist phrases describe location, duration, and intensity, then help you confirm the treatment and cost before agreeing.

This guide supports communication, not dental or insurance advice. Ask the practice and your insurer for information specific to your treatment and cover.

A practical conversation flow

A routine or urgent appointment usually follows this sequence:

  1. Say why you are there and point to the affected area.
  2. Explain when the problem began and what triggers it.
  3. Answer questions about medication, allergies, and previous treatment.
  4. Ask the dentist to explain the finding and available options.
  5. Confirm pain relief, risks, cost, and the next appointment.

A clear opening is:

Ich habe seit gestern starke Zahnschmerzen auf der linken Seite.

“I have had severe toothache on the left side since yesterday.” Add what makes it worse:

Der Zahn tut besonders weh, wenn ich etwas Kaltes trinke.

“The tooth hurts especially when I drink something cold.”

German dentist phrases you can use

German English When to use it
Ich habe Zahnschmerzen. I have toothache. State the main problem
Es tut hier oben rechts weh. It hurts here at the upper right. Locate pain while pointing
Der Schmerz ist stechend. The pain is sharp. Describe the sensation
Der Schmerz ist dumpf und dauerhaft. The pain is dull and constant. Describe ongoing pain

Können wir eine kurze Pause machen? Can we take a short break? Pause during treatment

Use seit with the present tense for a problem that is still happening: Ich habe seit drei Tagen Schmerzen, not für drei Tage.

Questions you may hear

The dentist or assistant may ask:

  • Wo genau tut es weh? — Where exactly does it hurt?
  • Seit wann haben Sie Schmerzen? — How long have you been in pain?
  • Ist der Schmerz ständig da? — Is the pain there all the time?
  • Reagiert der Zahn auf heiß oder kalt? — Does the tooth react to heat or cold?
  • Nehmen Sie Medikamente? — Do you take medication?
  • Haben Sie Allergien? — Do you have allergies?
  • Sind Sie mit einer Röntgenaufnahme einverstanden? — Do you agree to an X-ray?

If you use painkillers or other medication, give the name and when you last took it. If you are unsure of the German pronunciation, show the packaging or a written list.

Understanding treatment options

Do not be afraid to ask for a plain-language explanation. Start with:

Was haben Sie festgestellt?

“What did you find?” Then ask:

  • Welche Behandlung empfehlen Sie? — Which treatment do you recommend?
  • Gibt es eine Alternative? — Is there an alternative?
  • Ist die Behandlung heute notwendig? — Is the treatment necessary today?
  • Wie lange dauert die Behandlung? — How long does the treatment take?
  • Bekomme ich eine örtliche Betäubung? — Will I receive a local anaesthetic?
  • Was darf ich danach essen oder trinken? — What may I eat or drink afterwards?
  • Wann soll ich zur Kontrolle kommen? — When should I return for a check-up?

Knowing the word does not mean you must agree immediately. Ask what is urgent and what can be considered later.

Asking about costs before treatment

Coverage and personal costs vary by treatment and insurance arrangement. Ask the practice for a written explanation rather than making assumptions.

  • Übernimmt meine Krankenkasse die Kosten? — Does my health insurer cover the costs?
  • Welche Kosten muss ich selbst bezahlen? — Which costs do I have to pay myself?
  • Wie hoch ist mein Eigenanteil? — How much is my personal contribution?
  • Gibt es eine Kassenleistung? — Is there an option covered under statutory insurance?
  • Könnte ich bitte einen schriftlichen Kostenplan bekommen? — Could I have a written cost plan, please?
— Do I need to submit the treatment and cost plan first?
  • Entstehen heute zusätzliche Kosten? — Will there be additional costs today?

Repeat the amount and scope back: Habe ich richtig verstanden, dass mein Eigenanteil ungefähr 250 Euro beträgt? This checks both the number and your responsibility.

Complete roleplay: pain, treatment, and price

Dentist: Guten Morgen. Was führt Sie zu uns?
You: Ich habe seit drei Tagen Schmerzen unten links. Seit heute Nacht pocht es stark.
Dentist: Reagiert der Zahn auf Kälte oder Wärme?
You: Ja, besonders auf Kälte.
You: Ich nehme dieses Medikament regelmäßig.
You: In Ordnung.
You: Danke. Das hilft mir.

Recovery phrases in the chair

When you cannot speak normally, agree on a hand signal before treatment. Before or after the examination, use:

  • Könnten Sie das bitte ohne Fachbegriffe erklären? — Could you explain that without technical terms?
  • Bitte sprechen Sie etwas langsamer. — Please speak a little more slowly.
  • Welchen Zahn meinen Sie genau? — Which tooth exactly do you mean?
  • Habe ich richtig verstanden, dass …? — Have I understood correctly that …?
  • Ich möchte kurz darüber nachdenken. — I would like to think about that briefly.
  • Bitte schreiben Sie die Nachsorgehinweise auf. — Please write down the aftercare instructions.

Common mistakes

Using Ich habe Zahnweh without details

Zahnweh is understandable, but the dentist still needs location, duration, triggers, and severity. Prepare one complete sentence.

Confusing oben and unten

Oben means upper and unten means lower; links and rechts are left and right from your perspective. Point as you speak if uncertain.

Saying yes before you understand the cost

A quick ja may sound like agreement. Ask whether a proposed option has an extra charge and request written figures when appropriate.

Hiding dental anxiety

Saying Ich habe Angst vor der Behandlung helps the team adapt explanations, pauses, and pacing. It is practical information, not a language failure.

Prepare before the appointment

Write down the affected area, when the pain began, triggers, current medication, allergies, and your three main questions. Bring relevant insurance information and any requested records. Practise saying your symptom summary aloud twice, then practise asking for a slower explanation and a written cost plan.

Practice with Leni

Practice your dentist appointment with Leni using a realistic consultation. Start with:

Please roleplay a German dentist. I have throbbing pain in a lower tooth, I am nervous, and I need to understand the proposed treatment and my possible costs. Ask follow-up questions and let me practise clarifying before I agree.

Repeat once with a lost filling and once with a routine check-up so you can handle different questions.
