How to Call In Sick in German: Krankmeldung Phrases
Calling in sick is stressful. In German, the challenge is knowing how direct to be. Your manager needs to know that you cannot work, when you will update them, and whether an urgent task needs a handover—not a symptom list.
A Krankmeldung is your notification that you are unfit for work. An Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung (AU) is medical certification. Follow your employer’s reporting process and ask if you are unsure what is required.
The simplest way to call in sick in German
A reliable opening is:
“Good morning, this is [name]. Unfortunately, I am ill today and cannot work.”
Then add what you currently know:
“I expect to be off until Wednesday. I will get in touch again tomorrow with an update.”
If you do not know how long you will be away, say exactly that:
“I cannot yet say how long I will be off. I will let you know as soon as I know more.”
Do not promise that you will return tomorrow if you genuinely do not know.
A realistic Krankmeldung conversation flow
When you call in sick in German, the conversation may follow this structure:
- Identify yourself and say that you cannot work.
- Give the likely duration, or say when you will provide an update.
- Confirm whether you need to contact anyone else or follow a company process.
- Mention only essential handover information.
- End by repeating the next update or expected return date.
Contact the person or channel specified by your workplace. Deadlines, certification, and notification procedures can depend on your employment situation and employer policy; this language guide is not legal advice.

In Germany, sich krankmelden is the everyday verb:
Ich muss mich für heute krankmelden.
“I need to call in sick for today.” It does not literally require a phone call; your employer may use email, chat, an HR system, or another process.
Complete mini-roleplay: calling your manager
Manager: Guten Morgen, Frau Evans.
You: Guten Morgen, Herr Becker. Ich muss mich leider krankmelden. Ich bin heute nicht arbeitsfähig.
Manager: Oh, gute Besserung. Wissen Sie schon, wie lange Sie ausfallen?
You: Noch nicht genau.
Manager: In Ordnung. Können Sie bitte auch das HR-Team informieren?
You: Ja, mache ich.
You: Alles klar.
You: Danke.
The employee gives a clear status, does not overshare medical details, checks the internal process, and limits the handover to one urgent item.

Short message to a manager
Guten Morgen [Name],

Message when the duration is unclear
Guten Morgen [Name],
[Name]
Bis einschließlich Donnerstag means that Thursday is included. This is clearer than bis Donnerstag, which people may interpret differently.
If your manager asks follow-up questions
You can answer practical questions without giving a full medical history:
— I expect to be unfit for work through Monday.
— I cannot assess that yet.
— I will give you an update after the appointment.
— I am not available today and need to rest.
— I would prefer not to go into detail about my diagnosis.
— For organisational questions, please send me a short message.
Recovery phrases for a stressful call
If you feel ill, even easy German can disappear. These phrases buy time:
- Entschuldigung, könnten Sie die Frage bitte wiederholen? — Sorry, could you repeat the question?
- Einen Moment, ich muss kurz nachsehen. — One moment, I need to check.
— Have I understood correctly that I should also inform HR?
- Könnten Sie mir das bitte kurz per Nachricht schicken? — Could you send that to me in a short message?
— I cannot give an exact answer right now.
Common mistakes to avoid
Saying only Ich komme nicht
“I am not coming” sounds incomplete and may suggest a transport or scheduling issue.
Offering to work from home automatically
Being too sick for the office does not necessarily mean you should work remotely. If you are not fit to work, state that clearly rather than creating ambiguity.
Sharing too much information
A long symptom list can distract from the notification. Give the practical work status first. Share medical information only when you choose to or when specific professional advice tells you it is necessary.
Forgetting the next update
If the duration is unknown, say when you will contact the manager again. Ich melde mich morgen Vormittag gives both sides a clear expectation.
Using Urlaub for sick leave
Urlaub means holiday or vacation. Use krank, arbeitsunfähig, or Krankmeldung for illness-related absence.
Practise before you need the words
Record yourself saying a 20-second notification with your name, work status, expected duration, and next update. Then rehearse three complications: your manager asks whether you can work from home, you do not yet know the duration, and you need to explain where an urgent file is.
