German Job Interview Phrases: What to Say When You Freeze

A German job interview can feel harder than normal German practice because the stakes are obvious: you want the role, you want to sound competent, and you do not want one missed word to make you panic.

The goal is not to speak perfect German. The goal is to answer clearly, ask for clarification when needed, and show that you can keep the conversation moving.

What usually happens in real life

Most German interviews start with a friendly opener, then move into your background, motivation, experience, strengths, availability, and questions for the company.

You may hear:

  • Erzählen Sie uns kurz etwas über sich. — Tell us briefly about yourself.
  • Warum interessieren Sie sich für diese Stelle? — Why are you interested in this position?
  • Welche Erfahrungen bringen Sie mit? — What experience do you bring?
  • Was sind Ihre Stärken? — What are your strengths?
  • Haben Sie Fragen an uns? — Do you have questions for us?

Useful German phrases

Start with a simple self-introduction:

  • Gerne. Ich heiße … und ich arbeite seit … Jahren im Bereich …
  • In meiner letzten Position war ich verantwortlich für …
  • Ich habe Erfahrung mit … und möchte mich in diesem Bereich weiterentwickeln.

Explain motivation:

  • Die Stelle interessiert mich, weil …
  • Besonders spannend finde ich, dass Ihr Unternehmen …
  • Ich suche eine Position, in der ich … einbringen kann.

Talk about strengths:

  • Ich arbeite strukturiert und kommuniziere klar.
  • Ich lerne schnell und kann mich gut in neue Themen einarbeiten.
  • Ich übernehme gerne Verantwortung.

Rescue phrases if you freeze

  • Könnten Sie die Frage bitte wiederholen?
  • Meinen Sie damit …?
  • Ich brauche kurz einen Moment, um das auf Deutsch zu formulieren.
  • Darf ich das etwas einfacher erklären?

These phrases are not weakness. They show control.

Mini roleplay

Recruiter: Erzählen Sie uns kurz etwas über sich.
You: Gerne. Ich heiße Alex und arbeite seit vier Jahren im Bereich Customer Support. In meiner letzten Position war ich verantwortlich für Kundenkommunikation und interne Prozesse.
Recruiter: Warum interessieren Sie sich für diese Stelle?
You: Die Stelle interessiert mich, weil ich meine Erfahrung mit internationalen Kunden einbringen kann und mich fachlich weiterentwickeln möchte.
Recruiter: Haben Sie Fragen an uns?
You: Ja, gerne. Wie sieht die Einarbeitung in den ersten Wochen aus?

Common mistakes

Do not translate every English sentence word for word. Keep answers short and structured.

Instead of trying to say everything at once, use this pattern:

  1. My background
  2. One concrete example
  3. Why it fits this role

Practice this before the interview

Reading phrases once is not enough. You need retrieval practice under light pressure.

Practice your German job interview with Leni and rehearse the exact questions you expect: self-introduction, motivation, salary, availability, and your questions for the company.
